Kundalini Yoga

Every week, I teach students both publicly in Florence or privately in their place of choosing either in town or country.

  • What is Kundalini Yoga?

It has been said that a well-taught Kundalini Yoga class leaves you feeling like you’ve gone to therapy, had a challenging core workout in the gym, released some pent-up emotions, used your voice to tap into a vibrational frequency, danced a bit, connected with some inner wisdom, felt refreshingly relaxed and honoured your guru within. Participating in today’s kundalini yoga class can seem so relevant, therapeutic and fresh, it is as if the age-old practices were designed for 21st century living. There is always a wonderful music playlist that accompanies each class.

Kundalini Yoga incorporates a sequence of movement and stretch, specific dynamic breathing techniques, meditation, and the chanting of mantras in order to uplift and vitalize. Some consider it as a workout for the mind, body and the spirit.

Kundalini yoga focuses specifically upon bringing flexibility to the spine and encouraging the spinal fluid to flow. It opens the body’s chakras - or main energy centres. The spine is the “superhighway” of energy that connects the nerves, the chakras, the vital meridians and circulates these magnetic life forces throughout the body. The yoga atunes the entire nervous system leaving you feeling extremely relaxed afterwards and aligned with your core self.

What’s Included?

  • Breathwork

One of the most important aspects of well-being is our relationship to our breath, and more importantly, how many of us have forgotten to breathe in the correct way.

A large component of every session is dedicated to using various types of breath work — or pranayama -- to help the student, clear, release and cleanse. The breath is used to bring oxygen into the body which leaves the student feeling energized, emotionally balanced and the brain and nervous system more relaxed.

  • Postures

In Kundalini yoga, there are hundreds of sets of repetitive movements, classic Hatha yoga postures, stretches, and specific breath work in flow with the movement. They yogic postures have a wide range of benefits from aiding the digestive system, to cleaning the lymphatic system, to helping the immune system and glandular systems. The sets can help with chronic stress, depression, insomnia, addiction, hormone imbalance, hypertension and trauma. There are movements for particular organs such as the liver or kidneys; there are others to help release fear and open the heart chakra; there are techniques to cleanse the blood. The list goes on and on.

  • MEDITATION

Meditation is the mind and body’s ability to relax and to become extremely present to ourselves and to witness the world around us. Regular meditators learn the ability to maintain a neutral mind where there is little reaction to the drama that surrounds them and allows them to live their lives with more balance. It is when we are relaxed and present that we can begin to clear through our past trauma and conditioning and become more aware of our authentic selves. Meditation helps us evolve as more compassionate and loving humans.

  • Yoga Nidra

Yoga Nidra is known as ‘conscious sleep’ and is different than meditation. You begin with an intention and then are guided through different stages of the yoga into a more sub-conscious state. The mind is made quiet and relaxed yet entirely receptive. It is said that an hour of Yoga Nidra is comparable to four hours of sleep. It is a potent therapy for anxiety, stress relief, rejuvenation for the nervous system and more heightened self-awareness and self-illumination. Yoga Nidra components are integrated into the end of each session or can be explored in their own right.

  • Sound Therapy

Music comprises an important aspect of every session. Be it a specially created playlist, singing, chanting or humming — music is a strong vibration that shifts our hearts as well as stimulating our neuron cells for enhanced cell production and better memory ability. Be it a soft meditation or something body moving, music is used as its own effective method.
